Tor
Tor is a JUNO Award winning music producer and DJ who has been releasing original music since 2011.
"Oasis Sky" is Tor’s first original body of work since his 2016 album, "Blue Book". It expands on the latter’s meditative
energy with the producer’s signature warmth and beat-driven atmospherics, while digging deeper into the
experiences and emotions that have informed the past 4 years of his life. From a busy touring schedule that saw the
Vancouver-based producer playing his music across the U.S., the E.U., Australia, and Costa Rica, as well as being
sought out to produce remixes for Max Cooper, Fejká, Frameworks, and RÜFÜS DU SOL, the album only began to
come into focus after slowing down, establishing roots, finding centre and introspection in a new living space.
Since Oasis Sky's release it has gone on to accumulate over 26 million streams across platforms, been played on
BBC Radio 1, Sirius XM Chill, and NPR, featured on CSI: Vegas, and won Electronic Album of the Year at the 2022

Convergence Festival 2024!
Salt Spring Arts Council & The Salt Spring Chamber Of Commerce - in partnership with Salt Spring Exchange - happily present the 3rd Convergence Festival in downtown Ganges on Friday, September 20th, 2024 - a free, single-day festival produced by Tommy van Deursen, Mateada’s Artistic Director since 2021.
Convergence Festival takes place at the location where the inter-island tidal river reaches the Ganges harbour. This is a location where wildly diverse and rich ecological life converges - hence the dual meaning of the event name. The day-long event is a free, family friendly festival that encourages our local community to gather and connect after the bustle of the tourism season subsides. Convergence aims to celebrate local creative talent, build community cohesion, and inspire engagement and investment in community impact throughout the coming year.
A line-up of brilliant local musicians will be taking the stage between 1pm - 10pm. In order of appearance:
A selection of compositions from the GISS Music Program, starting our day at 1pm
A rockin’ set of music from Sugarbeat
The long-form grooves and heartfelt lyrics of Hilltop Pranksters
A soulful deep-dive with Sophia Danai + Safiya Labelle
Upbeat funk etc with Woodland ft. Yael Wand + Phöenix Lazare
Classic rock and beautiful psych etc from The Dang Package
A Modern take on classic new wave with Drama Queen
The hard-touring yet locally based sextet Small Town Artillery Collective to close us down
Besides a full day of great music, we also get a chance to say our goodbyes - Convergence is sadly the end of Mateada but it’s also the beginning of a new chapter in the support for local performing arts and music on salt spring. It can’t happen without your support. An on-site presence from Salt Spring Arts, The Chamber and SGITP will be activated, featuring a kids & craft zone, the Gulf Island Events Calender, and we encourage you to head over to the “community tent” to get involved and share how you could contribute - let’s dream up the future together!
The Mateada itself will serve as the licensed area for this event. You will need 2 pieces of Government issued ID to get in, and a limited drink menu will be available for purchase! Outside in the event grounds, Mateada’s kitchen crew will be serving a limited menu also for purchase - featuring Choripan, Arepas & Chipas, with both veggie and meat options. You’ll need to purchase food tickets from Mateada and take them out to get some grub!
The parking lot immediately outside the Mateada will be foot traffic only for the entire day of September 20th, however the larger parking lot beside Salt Spring Coffee will remain open for vehicles.
This event takes place on the un-surrendered and sovereign lands of the Hul'qumi'num and SENĆOŦEN speaking peoples, including the Quw'utsun First Nation and Tsawout First Nation.
Convergence was dreamed up by Tommy van Deursen in 2022 + 2023, and was funded by Guayaki Yerba Mate Co. This year, many local businesses are stepping up to make this free & for the community event possible. Presented by The Chamber + Salt Spring Arts Council in Partnership with Salt Spring Exchange. We need to give a massive thank you to additional support from Cassette, Salty Pay, Gulf Island Events / The SGITP, The Philip + Muriel Berman Foundation.
We look forward to seeing you on Sept 20th!

War is Over, Forever!:
I'm Matthew McKinney, a storyteller and folk singer/ songwriter drawing another circle with my feet over our good green Earth to sing for the people. I'm a local Salt Springer and have returned home from my summer tour to share this dynamic performance with my community.
An old idea is that in times of trouble, songs and stories are just as important nourishment as food and water. These are those times. Economic distress, climate catastrophe, post-pandemic recovery, political divisions to the point of complete rupture and corruption, the emergence and reckoning of truths and untruths yet to be integrated. And yet, here we are, people not unlike people from every other time period learning how to walk this road of life.
This set addresses many of the swirling uncertainties, the larger process we as humanity face in our fates and destinies.
These songs come from the crucible of life, moving through the challenges of our time. This performance flows out of my encounters in the various lineages of folk, blues, and rock and roll, the social movements in counter-culture, and drawing on a deeper nature-connected ancestral past to face the cataclysms of the present. This tour explores the end of war and its varied layers, and our individual and collective places in it.
Come away with a truly enjoyable experience that stirs the heart and nourishes the soul, bringing joy and relief.
My music is a blend of musical performance and storytelling that often brings people into a deeper experience that can feel interactive.
As a young man, I was obsessed by the old concept of "bard." Through journeys into wilderness and a practice of mentoring and learning from Earth-based lineages, my performances often bring forward the discourses of human connection with nature, with these transitional times, our ancestral history and it's complexities of belonging to place and within culture, and our personal journeys within these movements.
“Through his original songwriting, Matt McKinney mixes personal story and the mythological, informed by the journey of connecting deeply in the wilderness and a variety of travels through diverse cultures and landscapes. His performative songwriting, driven by creative and interesting vocal melody, poetic lyricism, energetic presence, and skillful guitar playing, provides an experience that can touch your heart, your soul, surprises and awakens the passion to remember our own meaningful journeys of deepening and transformation in connection with the mysteries of life.”
Thanks so much and I look forward to seeing you there.

Kim Churchill
Our final hurrah for our full-time program is not one, but TWO nights with the extraordinary Kim Churchill!
Tickets are $30 Advance and can be found at the bottom of this page.
Kim Churchill was born in Canberra and moved to the town of Merimbula at around age seven.[1][2] He picked his first guitar when he was 4 years old when his father promised him a guitar if he did well in school. He was trained in classical guitar for ten years.[3] He accompanies his guitar with blues harp (harmonica), stomp box, drums, and percussion instruments.[4] He also plays lapsteel and tambourine.
He started singing and playing in front of crowds very early, writing songs while experimenting various tunes or while busking in various venues. An avid fan of surfing, he incorporated the sport in many of his songs and music videos. Churchill tours extensively and has become a favourite during music festivals including the East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival (Australia's "Bluesfest"), the Woodford Folk Festival,[3] and other Australian venues. He has particular following in Canada[5][6] where he took part in Canadian Music Week, the Ottawa Folk Festival and the famous Montreal International Jazz Festival.[7] He enjoys good following in the United States where he performed at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas and the International Folk Federation Conference in Memphis,[8] plus a tour in England, other European venues, and in Japan.
He released his debut single "Loving Home" that received regular airplay nationally on Australian Triple J radio and ABC Radio National, as well as local and community stations all over Australia. His debut album was entitled With Sword and Shield[9] and released under the title Kim Churchill internationally.[10]
Churchill's second studio album was released on 15 May 2012 being the album Detail of Distance.[11] It was recorded in Vancouver, Canada and was produced by Tod Simko and released by Indica Records. Owing to his popularity in Canada, the release was supported by a 2012 pan-Canadian national summer tour. In 2013 Churchill supported Billy Bragg on his Tooth and Nail tour.
His fourth album Silence/Win was released on 1 April 2014 through Fontana North. Produced by Warne Livesey, it was recorded primarily in sessions in Ucluelet on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.[12] He also engaged on a pan-Canadian tour to promote the album. The track "Some Days the Rain May Fall" from the album charted on ARIA, the official Australian Singles Chart reaching number 86. Another track from the same album "Window to the Sky" was remixed by the French deep house and electro music producer The Avener and released in France as "You're My Window to the Sky" and charting on SNEP, the French Official Singles Chart.[13]
In 2023, "Window to the Sky" was certified Platinum by Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), while at the same time the 2017 "Second Hand Car" was certified Gold.[14]

Blackwood is an very unusual group – bass clarinet and piano --made up of bass clarinetist Jeff Reilly and pianist/composer Peter-Anthony Togni; between the two of them they have 4 JUNO nominations. They have a problem called “Day’s Last Glow”: a “haunting” and “atmospheric” mix of new and old; music composed and improvised on a unique foundation of Gregorian Chant, jazz, and Minimalism. “Twilight: At Days’ Last Glow” was featured as part of the 2022 Elora Festival in Ontario, held in a church at dusk to reflect the concert’s title. It was one of the best attended events of the festival! Based in Halifax, they perform regularly at jazz festivals, new music organizations, classical music series—really just about anywhere.
As two-thirds of the trio Sanctuary, Jeff and Peter have performed in Shanghai, Paris, London, New York, St Petersburg, Moscow, Riga, Toronto, Montreal and more, and on highly successful ECM album “Lamentatio Jeremiae Prophetae”.

It can squeeze the heart in your chest, it can draw tears from your eyes, and it can force you to get up and move your body; over and over, it somehow manages to do all three at once. Mandy Fer also tours as the lead guitarist for Amos Lee and Allison Russell and has recently performed with Brandi Carlile.

Fawkes & Hownd + YAEL WAND
Intimate folk duo Fawkes & Hownd is purely authentic. Blending Canadian and American roots, Phöenix Lazare and Justin Kelley have created a songwriting style that feels as if they’ve invited you into their living room, sharing personal stories.
Partners in life and in music, Fawkes & Hownd met studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston. The duo made an introduction with their 2019 EP Balancing Act, a five-song collection recorded live in Nashville that carries themes of growth, reflection and hope. Their songs chronicle journeys from small towns — Phöenix from Salt Spring Island, BC and Justin from Byfield, MA — to big cities and everything in between.
Sharing new music for the first time in five years, Fawkes & Hownd are debuting a refined sound with their new EP Backroads out June 7th. The project features four original songs recorded at Barnhouse Sound Studio in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia.
Backroads is self-produced by Justin Kelley and features the addition of Atom Lazare on drums and Sam Schuette on bass. “The production focus was to simplify and lead with intention,” Justin says. “We leaned on the musicianship of our band members, allowing for freedom of interpretation in service to the songwriting.”
The album’s single “Follow You Anywhere” shares a new flavour of Fawkes & Hownd. The Fleetwood-inspired folk/rock groove is driven by crunchy electric guitar and upfront harmonies. “Follow You Anywhere” is an anthem for the lovers and the risk-takers; those who are unafraid to embrace the unfamiliar. Inspired by the couple’s cross-country moves and growing pains, it’s a spirited take on your not-so-typical love song.
Backroads is a window into how Justin and Phöenix have grown since their last release, musically and emotionally. “These four songs reflect on where we came from and dream about where we’re going,” says Phöenix. “They were all written in the same weekend on a songwriting trip we treated ourselves to in 2023 when it felt like a new chapter was beginning.”
Enter this new chapter with Fawkes & Hownd.
Opening up the show is Saltspring’s own Yael Wand! Community Arts Weaver and long-time seasoned songwriter / performer.

Qairo
Qairo! They have played Beaver Point Hall and Convergence Festival 2023 - they are back for an intimate show at Mateada on July 13th.This group fuses funk and jazz with flamenco and so much more. They are an absolute sight to behold.
Qairo is an exhilarating fusion of Flamenco, Turkish music, and Arabic and Balkan influences. The band’s original compositions, enhanced by electronic sounds, showcase Mediterranean traditions with a modern twist. Dance is integral to Qairo’s performance, and "La Caramelita," a Canadian flamenco dancer of Indian/Malaysian origin, embodies the music's boundless spirit.
Qairo emerged from a desire to blend various styles, creating music that is unique and representative of its members. The name Qairo refers not only to the iconic city of Cairo but also to 'kairos,' an ancient Greek concept meaning 'the right moment, the opportunity to be seized.'
Qairo releases their first album in January, 2025. The compositions blend different Mediterranean styles harmoniously. We are transported on a modern Spice Road where powerful, heartfelt flamenco vocals are accompanied by oud or Turkish clarinet, and underlined by danceable grooves.

Rachael Kilgour + Kristin Lindell
Two incredible songstresses cross paths on tour to join forces for a night of very strong songwriting at Mateada! We are grateful to these two women and their teams for being open to combining forces as they both route across the PNW.
RACHAEL KILGOUR:
“I think I'm gonna make a Dad album,” songwriter Rachael Kilgour heard herself blurt out one afternoon in an Asheville recording studio. She was in the final days of tracking her EP Game Changer (2019), and in the final months, as it would turn out, of her father's life. She had just written a new song, “Dad Worked Hard.”
“I hadn't written any other songs about him at that point - I certainly hadn't considered making an entire album in his honor. I had no way of knowing how little time he had left or how much his death would transform me. But when the producer suggested recording ‘Dad Worked Hard’ for the new EP, I just knew I needed to hold onto it. So I said it: no, I think I’m gonna make a dad album.”
And she did. Kilgour's exquisite fourth full-length collection, My Father Loved Me, is a tribute to her late father, produced by JUNO Award-winning songwriter Rose Cousins and recorded in the senior Kilgour's native Canada. In the spare, often gutting language for which she is known, Kilgour gives us a complex portrait of a man as seen through his daughter's eyes. With unwavering acuity she poses questions about identity, inheritance, and grief, and affirms the value of one ordinary working man's life to an often indifferent world.
Like her father, Kilgour is a hard worker. She comes by her considerable skills honestly, honing her craft over the past decade in listening rooms, festivals, concert halls, and recording studios, and picking up accolades along the way. Kilgour first attained notoriety outside her native Duluth, MN as the grand prize winner of the 2015 international NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition and winner of the 2017 Kerrville New Folk Contest. She has been featured at NYC’s Lincoln Center, at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and at the Sundance Film Festival. Her oft-noted “unapologetic lyrics” (Rolling Stone) and “master crafted indie folk” sensibilities (Billboard) are on full display in this latest collection of songs.
KRISTIN LINDELL:
Folk music songstress Kristin Lindell infuses folk and blues into her vivid songs, telling stories of connection. Her shimmering vocals and uplifting sound are matched by her talented band. Her third album and latest project River of Light, contains nine songs about going within, inviting listeners to explore vulnerability and creativity through the metaphors of connecting to nature, water, rivers and our raw voice. Kristin has performed at festivals and venues across Canada and has played as far west as Saltspring Island and as far east as Portland Maine.
Her ethereal voice conveys both earthy folk and shimmering jazz, inspired by Eva Cassidy, Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux and Joni Mitchell, her style infuses roots with folk, jazz and blues. Her effervescence and warmth shine through in her easygoing stage presence. With her playful demeanor and uplifting voice she has performed at bistros, festivals, wine bars and events across Canada and the U.S.
Her set is a mix of tasteful toe tapping covers and roots swingy songs, as well as her originals from the new album River of Light, produced by Great Lake Swimmer’s bassist Bret Higgins. Solo, duo or full band, Kristin Lindell delivers heart lifting music for audiences.

Sam Wilson Trio
‘It’s a highly unusual jazz album, and one that departs from most jazz conventions in significant ways, but that never seems to get old in the listening.’ - Rick Anderson on Wintertides
‘This trio creates a sort of sonic photo album that demands repeated listening' - Davide Reid on Wintertides
“Sometimes on electric guitar, sometimes on acoustic guitar, Sam Wilson, throughout the record, demonstrates a very singular narrative expertise, which, however, made us think from time to time of Ralph Towner is certainly an original voice that we would like to hear on stage at home.” - Yves Dorison on Wintertides
Sam Wilson is a guitarist-composer whose practice focuses on creating instrumental music for improvisers. Her current artistic muse is wild spaces and site-specific responses, evident by her latest release Wintertides, featuring drummer Jen Yakamovich and bassist Geordie Hart. Written in the winter of 2022 on both the east (Scotsburn, NS) and west Coast (at Lena Residency, Galiano Island BC), it’s inspired by contrasting landscapes and the collaboration of bi-coastal communities. Her albums Into a Heart Pt. II and New Doors (Jackson/Wilson Duo) won Music Nova Scotia’s “Jazz Recording of the Year” in 2022 and 2023, respectively. In 2021 Sam won the Paul Cram Creation award and composed her first piece for orchestra, ‘Recover-we’, which was performed by Symphony Nova Scotia at the 2023 Open Waters Festival.
Sam was raised in Ontario but has made Nova Scotia her home for more than a decade; she currently resides in Halifax. She performs regularly with collaborator Andrew Jackson (Jackson\Wilson Duo) and with Nicola Miller and Gabriella Ciurcovich (Yarrow), she has worked with Phillip Greenlief, Andrew Mackelvie, Nicholas D'amato, Music Declares Emergency, Votive Dance, Upstream Music Association, and many more artists around the maritimes.

They have performed on stages such as The Troubadour, Mississippi Studios, “The Egg” (Albany, NY), Folklore (UK), and Java (Paris); at festivals like Imagine Music & Arts Festival, Oregon Country Faire, SXSW, Summer Meltdown, Seattle Folk Life, Capitol Hill Block Party, and many more.
At the heart of the project is Gabriel Wolfchild and his brother Elion TruthHeart.
Gabriel’s emotive lyricism, enchanting vocals, and unique guitar work quickly won over Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Christina Aguilera on NBC’s The Voice with his soulful rendition of Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright”, culminating in a national tour.
Elion is a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist who effortlessly flows between drums and a variety of exotic string and woodwind accompaniment. He contributes to a rich vocal harmony that only brothers can create.
