Hendrika & Garbageman

  • small plates live music (map)

A double bill rock etc (so much inside that abbreviation) with Hendrika (aka Selina Heyligers-Hare) & Garbageman as part of a lengthy Canadian tour!

Hendrika:

Selina Heyligers-Hare is a vocalist, guitarist, pianist and songwriter who has performed countless times in Western Canada. She has established herself in a lead role and a supporting role for many bands coming out of her home Territory; The Yukon. After completing the Music and Technology program at Selkirk College, Selina was asked to join one of the biggest acts in the territory, she had had many propositions but decided to return home and work with Major Funk. Since then they have toured throughout Western Canada, recorded a studio EP and two full albums (with one to be released this spring), produced music videos and have been hired to play high end shows across the Yukon. Shortly afterwards Selina was hired by Paris Pick who she played and sang with for years on tours and fly in shows. In 2021 she was flown to the UK to join Paris at FocusWales. Another group of note would be The Naysayers. The well established band leader Drea Nasager chose Selina as her new lead guitar player, they recorded an album and are planning exciting things for the new year. Overall, she is a proficient and well sought after artist in the North West.

There have been many iterations of her band Hendrika over the years, they have been known to rock the bar stages with classic rock and blues while also showing their roots with soft, melodic folk harmonies. They play a mix of originals and covers as Selina considers it part of the job to adjust to the space, the people and the energy. The effect her voice has on the audience is one of awe and captivation. She has been called the next Ann Wilson, Janis Joplin or Aretha Franklin on many occasions due to the sheer strength, power and range that she possesses. Not only can she sing, but the stage is home, and she emanates a star quality while still being humble and kind in character. Her guitar playing is influenced by classic rock and blues while also showing notes of neo-soul and folk.

Garbageman:

Aiden Tentrees, aka Dave the Garbageman, cut his teeth in the Whitehorse music scene. As a youngster, he played local festivals and formed one-half of the legendary Yukon band, Soda Pony. Sprouting from his northern roots, Tentrees has now performed in more than 30 countries worldwide.

But this is a different adventure…

Garbageman got its start in 2018 when Dave began writing songs that didn’t fit in. They were songs from the margins – about people in the shadows and themes from the brink. Understandably, they also drew heavily on his experience of “garbage” in the entertainment industry.

So Dave began a solitary musical odyssey, completing a collection of songs centred on the concept of “waste.” What counts as waste? Who decides? What are the implications? Who cleans up? Fittingly, the endeavor was anchored by a Yamaha keyboard pilfered from the dump where he works. For real.

Garbageman’s project culminated with the 2021 release of his album, Tales from the Landfill. With influences as diverse as Tom Waits, The Pixies, and The Beatles, Tales from the Landfill sounds like a psychedelic radio broadcast from the porous edge of the galaxy.
