JAQUEST!

  • small plates live music (map)

David Jacquest is on a one man entertainment factory! He has been entertaining island audiences since he grew up playing John Lennon as a teenager in an island produced show called “Puttin’ on the Ritz!” back in 1986! From his not so humble beginnings as “POGO” in local outfit “POGO & the Carrot Revolution”, “JACQUEST!” has been the driving force behind dozens of island groups, including the aforementioned “POGO!”; and “JET SET” as well as the cover band “The Mancubs!”, & many others!

Since disbanding “POGO”, he has carried on their motto of “Jazz, Folk, Funk, Slam Dunk the Junk!” for almost 40 years now. This has included forays into Glam Rock, Power Pop, and Disco, much of which can be heard on his career retrospective “JACQUEST!” now available on Spotify and itunes. His shows (over 200 appearances on Salt Spring) since he grew up here in the 80’s and 90’s have been the stuff of legend! David “JACQUEST!” in the words of Treehouse Cafe owner Mark LeCorre,...“IS Rock n’ Roll!”. LeCorre would know, as “JACQUEST!” played the role of unofficial music director at the Treehouse Cafe for almost a decade, putting on dozens of tribute shows to Bob Dylan, and Neil Young, as well as being front man and lead guitarist for our local chapter of the “Wannabeatles”. He has since continued to play and grow in his almost 40 plus years of playing rock, “punk-jazz” and folk music at home and abroad.

His current date at the Mateada follows on the heels of last year’s “JACQUEST!” show which took the island by storm and featured a career retrospective of himself and his songwriting influences. This year’s show will feature openers “The Bowies” featuring his son Jack and Sue Newman (playing the songs of, you guessed it, ...David Bowie!), as well as backing by Brandon Bronson (SD 64 music teacher and drummer from Swing Shift) and touring bassist Sam Shuette. We caught up with David Jacquest after a long break from the rigours co-vid and of playing to his furniture! We asked him about his past and he had to say this:

“If you counted every project I have been involved with over the years you would easily amass a collection of over 10 albums covering every genre from rock and folk to disco!” My goal, stated plainly, is to bring back disco as our primary source of entertainment, and in short to take over the world by way of tickling people’s earlobes!” The show will follow a loose biography of sorts, paying tribute to his days as the new kid at Fernwood Elementary School (“Lunchtime”), working at a daycare in the 90’s (“Soccer Mom”), and the now island classic written with Dave Lettinga of Coalition fame: “Salt Spring Girls”!!! Tributes to Caspar the Friendly Ghost, Weezer, and the Spice Girls will abound!

Don’t miss this one of a kind foray into island entertainment!!!
